"Community Garden", An Award-Winning Miotto Mosaic

After posting the interview with Stephen Miotto, I thought you might like to see an example of his artfulness in translating paintings into mosaics. This is "Community Garden" by Andrea Dezso which was named Best American Public Art 2007 by Americans for the Arts. You'll find it at the Bedford Park Boulevard Station in NYC.

Glorious, no? For more pictures of the installation, click this link to the MTA Arts for Transit website:

Better yet, check out Andrea Dezso's website which offers great pics of the original painting, the mosaic being fabricated in Italy, and the installation in NYC. The link below will take you there. Once you arrive, look under "Featured Projects" for "MTA Arts for Transit" to see the images.

Check out the cat's paw shadows. That considered use of tesserae flow, or "andamento" not only separates the shadows from the background, but indicates which way the sun is shining.

This is what separates the "duplicators" from the artists of fabrication. Brilliant.

Enjoy -- Nancie
