Buddy, Can You Spare a Mil (or 15) for a Wright Designed Mosaic Fireplace?

Actually, that 15 million will get you a whole house. And not just any house.

For that mere pittance, you can live in the Ennis House, an architectural icon designed by Frank Lloyd Wright in 1924.

Dubbed by Wright the "Temple on the Hill", it is a stunner. The Mayan-inspired construction blocks serve as the keynote for the entire multi-tiered design that makes the most of spectacular views across LA.


Wright's signature elements are everywhere, from the "homage to Japan" wood-beamed ceilings to the Prairie-style leaded glass windows. This mish-mosh of styles shouldn't work, but it does, spectacularly.

And now for that fireplace. As noted in an NPR story, "The juxtaposition of natural elements — in this case, trees and fire — is a Wright custom. This glass-mosaic fireplace is one of only three ever made, and the last intact example." I do wish I had a better photo for you.

If any of this looks familiar, don't be surprised. The house actually deserves its own star on Hollywood Boulevard having served as a backdrop for over 25 movies in 50 years -- House on Haunted Hill was the first in 1958. Other cameo roles include appearances in Grand Canyon, Black Rain, The Rocketeer, Karate Kid III and, my personal fave, Blade Runner.

Unfortunately, the Hollywood Hills landmark has suffered serious damage from age and storm damage in 2005. The three non-profit organizations responsible for maintaining it simply cannot afford the $5-7 million needed to make the house structurally sound again hence, the sale
