You may remember Manchurian Cranes from the Gallery Section of our 2009 magazine. It is a truly memorable image -- notable for its graceful design and thoughtful use of andamento to indicate not just features like feathers and clouds, but painterly "brushstrokes" as well.It is the work of Sandra Bryant, one half of the husband and wife team of Carl and Sandra Bryant of Showcase Mosaics, Washington. The couple has won numerous honors for their glass mosaics.
Recently, Showcase Mosaics installed a commission for the Missouri Transportation Commission -- a very large mural that offers a dazzling display of the Bryants' expertise.

"Its a mosaic "map" of the history, people and sights to see in Northwestern Missouri. Our clients are really happy with it and people walking through the Welcome Center seem to enjoy it a lot -- particularly the people living in that section of the state because it celebrates their home towns.
"It took us about four months to piece it and 12 very long and arduous days to install. Doing the installation gave us the opportunity to see the reactions from the public and answer questions.
"Of course, the first question is always, 'How long did that take?' But my favorite question came from the woman who walked in after we had put up all the sections but hadn't grouted the mural yet. She came up to us and asked, 'Has there been an earthquake?'"
