Ravenna Dreaming

With the start of the Ravenna Mosaic Festival http://www.ravennamosaico.it/index.php?lng=en&p=1 a mere two weeks away (Oct. 10), we're doing a lot Ravenna dreaming here at Mosaic Art Now these days. Cruising through the internet we found so much that was informational and inspiring, this post got a little away from us.

Here you will find "somethings old" -- photos of Byzantine splendor from Ravenna's past taken by Norman Tellis and "somethings new" -- images of mosaics from the city's Peace Park taken by Ayca Bumin. At the end, there are videos that follow the creation of two of Marco Bravura's most famous mosaics, Ardea Pupurea and Recuperi dOro both of which reside in Ravenna.

But first, a 2007 video by an Episcopalian priest from Yonkers New York with his special take on the mosaics of Sant' Apollinare in Classe. It made us smile -- and think.

This last mosaic is Marco Bravura's Ardea Purparea, a spectacular mosaic fountain with a twin in Beirut, Lebanon. A video covering the construction and dedication of Ardea Purparea is below. Following that is a second video-- this one on Bravura's Recuperi d'Oro, another wonderful mosaic to be seen in the city of Ravenna.

There is still time to make those reservations for the Festival. Here is a link to the event's website. Check our August 24th post for more information. Thanks again to Norman and Ayca for their contributions to this lengthy post.

If you go, toast your absent friends here at MAN with a glass of Prosecco.

Enjoy -- Nancie
